3 Myths About Water Wells

January 31, 2025

Water wells have been integral to human civilization, providing essential access to groundwater for centuries. Despite their necessity, many misconceptions still exist about how wells operate and how to maintain them efficiently. Understanding these systems is crucial for ensuring their functionality and safeguarding water quality. Today, we’re here to debunk three of the most common water well myths to help you better understand these vital structures.

1. Believing Groundwater Is Unlimited

A prevalent myth is the belief that groundwater reserves are limitless. In reality, groundwater is a finite resource that can become depleted if overused. Wells rely on aquifers, which take time to replenish. Managing our water consumption responsibly ensures that we don't deplete these crucial resources faster than they can recharge, making sustainable habits and monitoring critically important. It’s worth noting that droughts and climate change can exacerbate groundwater scarcity. Consulting a water well treatment company can help identify ways to maximize efficiency and preserve resources.

2. Neglecting Water Well Maintenance

Another common myth is that once a well is dug, it requires no maintenance. Proper upkeep is crucial to ensure the well's longevity and the safety of the water supply. According to the New York State Department of Health, it is recommended to have a DEC-permitted waste transporter inspect and pump out your septic system every two to three years to avoid potential well contamination from a failing septic system. Regular inspections performed by a water well treatment company can identify and rectify issues before they compromise water quality.

3. Assuming All Water Is Pure

Many think that all groundwater, and hence all well water, is naturally pure. While it's true that groundwater can be cleaner than surface water, it's not immune to contamination. Factors such as local geology, nearby industrial activities, and agricultural runoff can introduce impurities. Working with a water well treatment company to perform regular testing for bacteria, nitrates, and other potential contaminants is essential to ensure the safety and potability of well water.

Dispelling these myths is a vital step toward ensuring a safe and sustainable water supply from wells. Understanding the importance of groundwater management, regular well maintenance, and vigilant water testing empowers well owners to act responsibly. By staying informed and proactive, we can protect one of our most precious resources for future generations. Many new homeowners get recovery rate (measured in gallons per minute or “GPM”) and well “storage” confused. Remember when a well driller refers to gallons per minute, this is the rate that the well is recharging or recovering at AFTER the “storage” has been pumped off. What is well “storage”? Think of it like a reserve tank. The volume of water stored in a well is noted by subtracting the static level from the total depth and multiplying the result by the well volume per linear foot. For Example – Say you have a 150’ 6” diameter water well. The static level of the water is 12’ from ground level. 150’-12’= 138’ of water storage. To get to gallons, know that 1 linear foot of 6” diameter pipe holds approximately 1.5 gallons of water. So, 138’*1.5 gallons/ft= 207 gallons of water storage. So how much water do I need to effectively run my home? A general rule of thumb is having enough water available to meet peak demand for 1 hour. Peak demand is the simultaneous usage of multiple water outlets during the morning and night. Peak demand can vary drastically depending on family size, size of the home and schedules. On average, two 2.5 gpm fixtures running at the same time for 60 minutes would result in 300 gallons of water used in that time frame. The well system needs to be capable of yielding this amount of water either from well storage, well recovery rate or a combination of the two. To answer, the average home requires about 300 gallons of water storage or a well recovery rate of 5 gallons per minute. There are many wells in Chautauqua County that do not provide sufficient flow or storage. Lower producing wells may require storage tank systems in order to meet peak demand. Before you decide to pick out that perfect spot to build your new home or buy the home of your dreams, consult a local professional water well driller that has experience with the area you are looking at.
